The Story of Bio-Activator

Necessity is the mother of invention and for this reason Bio-Activator was developed for the effective, efficient treatment of domestic sewage as well as organic waste in the industrial and agricultural sector.

South Africa and other African countries rely heavily on pit/VIP/Blair toilets and septic tanks (with French drains or soak-aways) for the disposal of human waste in rural, peri-urban and some urban households. There are many products on the market which claim that they can treat these toilet systems but they all have downfalls:

-          Some are hazardous chemicals which are dangerous and not safe for neither the people using these toilet systems nor the environment.

-          The chemical treatments do not get rid of the bad odours and impact negatively on ground and surface water.

-          Enzyme based products are also not safe for people and these can at best only achieve a limited reduction of the odours after 48 -72 hours (or more). Most of these (if not all) have an essential oil or chemical component for the purpose of masking the smells. The time frame stated to reduce the levels of the waste is long, usually 2 – 3 weeks.

-          Because the above types of treatments cannot completely eliminate the odours, flies and cockroaches are still attracted to those areas.

-          These products usually claim to reduce the number of pump-outs, not eliminate them.

Enzyme based products have many limitations inter alia because they are are highly selective catalysts and require an exact match to the bacterial strain in the specific application in order to have any effect.

Human waste in pit toilets and septic tanks cannot degrade quickly enough to prevent the generation of bad odours and to keep the level of the waste down. This can be attributed to the poor quality of bacteria that we pass (as a result of today’s processed and chemically treated foods), and also due to the chemical solutions used to clean the toilet.

Waste water treatment plants in all industries also do not function as efficiently as desired and in South Africa, for example, over 600 of the approximately 824 municipal waste water treatment works are considered to either be failing or to have failed completely. The major issue, apart from equipment failure and inexperienced personnel, is that the plants are not capable of dealing with organic overloads. They cannot digest the waste effectively and efficiently and as a result there is a build-up of sludge and the quality of the final effluent does not meet the Green Drop Standard. You cannot engineer a complete solution to a biological problem, ultimately it has to be resolved biologically.

The quest was therefore for a treatment that was not only safe for people, animals, crops and the environment in general, but also one that would completely prevent the generation of bad odours by efficiently and effectively digesting the waste in all waste water applications. Odour is a key performance indicator because if the smells are prevented from being generated then it indicates that the product is capable of degrading the waste completely. Bio-Activator was developed from locally sourced organic material and contains naturally occurring micro-organisms attached to organic compost. After extensive R & D the final product succeeds in achieving this objective, namely the prevention of bad odours being generated within the first 12 hours after application by digesting the waste quickly and efficiently. Bio-Activator is also completely safe and it can be transported, stored and handled without any specific safety precautions.

These treatments have been tried and tested with great success in many varied applications in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, and also in America, Canada, Romania and the United Kingdom.

The South African Bureau of Standards was approached for certification which responded as follows

“... your product already contains relevant organisms that are used in the treatment of waste water.”

and

“Unfortunately we cannot certify the product because there is currently no national standard to certify it against.”

However, the Standards Association of Zimbabwe has approved Bio-Activator for use in that country. The National Biosafety Authority of Zambia also approved Bio-Activator for use in Zambia and likewise the Zambian Ministry of Health also approved the importation and use of Bio-Activator.

Bio-Activator has been tested and applied extensively in Southern Africa in all forms of pit toilets, from crude holes in the ground to Ventilated Improved Pit toilets and Blair toilets, and also septic tanks serving ordinary households and various hospitality industries.

This product has also been extensively tested and applied with great success in various waste water treatment plants in Botswana. In a laboratory trial at Zambia Sugar, Bio-Activator achieved a 52% reduction in the COD in just 48 hours!

Bio-Activator is presented in the form of a fine, dry powder and it must be hydrated to activate the microbes before application. In the case of pit toilets and septic tanks this is achieved by mixing the specified dosage in a container with any quantity of ordinary tap, river or dam water for 3 – 6 hours.

In the case of waste water treatment systems the dosing is applied by way of a bio tank. The process is simple to apply, essentially a “plug and play” solution. The process is also non-invasive, requires no capital engineering or construction and there is no disruption to the daily work routine nor any down-time. Because the product does not contain any chemicals there is no risk of corrosion or other hazard to fittings and pumps nor any other negative effect. Bio-Activator is able to digest any accumulated sludge and it will also completely digest the silt that is usually left at the end of the process, thereby rendering the silt drying beds obsolete.
